""A frenectomy is a procedure used to correct a congenital condition in which the lingual (tongue) or labial (upper lip) frenulum is too tight, causing restrictions in movement and function that can cause significant difficulty with breastfeeding, and in some instances, other health problems like dental decay, tooth crowding, speech difficulties, feeding challenges, airway and breathing issues, sleep quality, atypical facial and jaw growth and development, head, neck and body compensations, and GI/digestive issues. When it affects the lingual frenulum (under the tongue), this condition is commonly called a tongue-tie (the medical term is ankyloglossia). Approximately 5% of the population has this condition, so your lactation consultant, medical doctor, myofunctional therapist, bodyworker, speech therapist, or other whole-body health provider may feel that this minor procedure is warranted to improve symptoms and function.

Babies one-year-old and under often have the consultation and procedure performed the same day, while older children require an initial consultation to assess behavior for the tolerance of the procedure itself and what their individual pre- and post-operative surgical needs may be.
